Overview
Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate uses holmium laser energy to separate and remove enlarged prostate tissue that obstructs urine flow. The removed tissue is fragmented and extracted from the bladder.
Common Symptoms
Weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, frequent urination, urgency, night-time urination, incomplete bladder emptying and urinary retention.
Possible Causes
Benign prostate enlargement can progressively narrow the urinary passage and obstruct urine flow.
Diagnosis
Evaluation may include symptom assessment, urine testing, PSA when appropriate, ultrasound, uroflowmetry and measurement of residual urine.
Treatment & Procedures
A laser instrument is introduced through the urethra. Enlarged obstructing prostate tissue is separated from the prostate capsule using laser energy and removed from the bladder.
Recovery & Follow-up
A catheter is generally used temporarily. Temporary urinary frequency, burning or blood in urine may occur during recovery.
Benefits
No external incision, laser-based treatment, effective removal of obstructing prostate tissue and minimally invasive treatment for suitable patients.
